Background
Concrete was once regarded as a durable material with no need of maintenance. However, it is now generally accepted that structural concrete does not have an indefinite life, i.e., it deteriorates with time. In coastal area of China, the service life of some reinforced concrete structures was much shorter than the designed life. On the other hand, many huge construction projects have been planed in these areas. It is very important to learn lessons from the failure cases and study the deterioration mechanism of concrete structures.
This workshop will present a state-of-the-art report on various deterioration mechanisms of concrete structures. The current Chinese practice will also be reviewed and compared with that in other countries. The excellent progress made in concrete durability research in Japan will then be introduced.
The requirements for further research in relation to the Chinese concrete practice will be identified. The workshop will be used as a platform to establish closer links between academia and concrete industry in Japan and concrete scientists and concrete industry in China.
